Zakhia or ‘Cleome viscosa’ is found in abundance in the Garhwal and Kumaon hills at an altitude of 500 to 1500 meters. Its seeds are quite flavourful and are used as an alternative to cumin and used in the tadka of kadhi etc. Jakhiya has many medicinal properties and is extensively used in the treatment of inflammation, liver problems, bronchitis and diarrhea. Its oil is considered very useful in the treatment of infantile congestion and mental disorders.
